Often we must be satisfied with having planted a seed. Most importantly, we need to have faith in the process of our work, the fact that important changes will take place in small units if we just hang in there with the person.

Gestalt therapy
Gestalt

Gestalt encourages self-awareness and acceptance. Gestalt is a German word that loosely translated means, to become whole. By gaining greater awareness of the different parts of themselves and accepting these parts rather than labeling them wrong or banish them, the Gestalt approach results in a sense of being more fully yourself.

My credo is best described by the below quotes:

Briefly stated, it is this: that change occurs when one becomes what he is, not when he tries to become what he is not. Change does not take place through a coercive attempt by the individual or by another person to change him, but it does take place if one takes the time and effort to be what he is — to be fully invested in his current positions. By rejecting the role of change agent, we make meaningful and orderly change possible

Even if I do nothing more than be a real presence for someone, I at least affirm the other person’s experiential validity. This affirmation is “therapeutic”, not only because the person grows to appreciate his intrinsic nature, but also because he develops the courage to push against his boundaries and test new behaviours.
